Explanation

-er = more, -st = most

If you add -er to the end of an adjective, it means "more …"; if you add -st, it means "most …".

groot (big) → groter (bigger) → grootst (biggest)

klein (small) → kleiner (smaller) → kleinst (smallest)

belangrijk (important) → belangrijker (more important) → belangrijkst (most important)

Welk land is groter? Marokko of Nederland? – Marokko.Which country is bigger, Morocco or the Netherlands? – Morocco.
Welk land is kleiner? Nederland of Turkije? – Nederland.Which country is smaller, the Netherlands or Turkey? – The Netherlands.

Comparison table

goed is irregular: goed – beter – best (good – better – best). veel and weinig are irregular too: veel – meer – meest, weinig – minder – minst.
