Explanation

Asking questions

In daily life you ask questions all the time: where does the bus leave from, what time is the appointment, how much is this? In the speaking and listening parts of the exam you also need to understand questions quickly.

In Dutch, to ask a question the word order changes: the verb comes first. In this topic you will learn the two types of questions and the most important question words.

Yes/no questions

In questions with the answer ja or nee, the conjugated verb comes first and the subject comes right after it: Je woont in Leiden. → Woon je in Leiden? / U heeft een afspraak. → Heeft u een afspraak?

If there is a second verb, it stays at the end: Kunt u dat herhalen? (Could you repeat that?) When jij/je comes after the verb, the verb loses its -t: Werk je morgen?

  • Spreekt u Turks?Do you speak Turkish?
  • Heb je kinderen?Do you have children?
