Modal verbs: moeten, willen, kunnen, mogen, zullen

Modale werkwoorden

moeten (obligation), willen (wish), kunnen (ability), mogen (permission) and zullen (promise, future): their conjugation, their place in the sentence and the difference between mogen and kunnen.

Explanation

Conjugating modal verbs

moeten, willen, zullen, mogen, kunnen are modal verbs. In the present tense ik and hij/zij are the same and do not take -t (ik moet, hij mag, zij kan). The verbs willen and kunnen have two forms for jij/u: jij wilt / wil, jij kunt / kan.

The second verb goes to the end of the sentence

The modal verb is in second place; the main verb goes to the very end of the sentence as an infinitive (Denk aan de infinitief van het werkwoord aan het einde van de zin).
