How do I know which exam I need to take?

If you live outside the Netherlands and are applying for family reunification, you will usually take the civic integration exam abroad (A1). If you are in the Netherlands, your obligation is stated in the letter from your gemeente or the official authority.

Do I have to pass each section separately?

Yes. Each section is assessed separately; you only retake the section you failed and don't need to redo the ones you passed.

Do time limits and question counts change?

The official authorities update the exam rules from time to time. We update our guides regularly, but always check the latest information from the official source before your exam.

How long do I need to study?

It depends on your starting level. For the A1 exam, people who study regularly usually feel ready within a few months. The readiness card on your dashboard shows which section is lagging behind.

Inburgering B1 · Staatsexamen NT2 I

Inburgering B1 is the standard goal in the new integration system. Its language sections have the same structure as Staatsexamen NT2 Programma I, and it's also a valid level for work and vocational training.
